Burg Könitz - Versatile use

Könitz Castle is a former hilltop castle and today's castle on the Schlossberg near Könitz and belongs to the municipality of Unterwellenborn in Thuringia. The estate, which is situated above Könitz, serves as a landmark of the market town and at an altitude of 345 metres you can enjoy a magnificent view of the slightly hilly landscape of the surrounding area.

The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1125 when Adalbert and Christine von Conz handed over the Könitz estate to the Saalfeld monastery. It is likely that the castle was built around 800 as a wooden castle. Besides this castle there was another castle - the Old Castle. In 1209 the castle became the property of the Counts of Schwarzburg. After the castle had changed hands several times, it went to the von Holbach family in 1438.

Around 1562 the castle was rebuilt into a Renaissance style castle and completed under Veit Dietrich von Holbach.
In 1640, during the Thirty Years' War, the Swedish Field Marshal Johann Banér established his headquarters in Könitz Castle. However, there was no battle on the Red Mountain. After the troops had left, the keep was completely burnt out and the entire area looted.
In 1663-1670 the widow Countess Emilie lived there. Several changes of ownership followed.

It is said that from 1892 onwards, the explorer Wilhelm Reiß had the castle repaired.
In 1918 the castle came to the state of Thuringia and was put to different uses.
After the end of the war, the castle was used for a variety of purposes. In 1951 it burned down and was completely destroyed. In the following years, it served as a "retirement home" after the rebuilding and as a "psychiatric nursing home" after the fall of the Wall.

Together with the main residential building and the outbuildings, the compact complex forms a pentagonal layout around a narrow courtyard, including the keep with its curtain wall. Individual buildings are equipped with a Renaissance roof and stair towers. On the ground floor there are still several late Gothic vaults.

The castle is embedded in idyllic nature, forests and meadows. The area is characterised by well-kept houses, a wide range of sports facilities, the nearby reservoirs - also known as the Thuringian Sea - and many recreational and water sports facilities. There is a horse stud farm and idyllic hiking and cycling paths nearby.

The region around Könitz is considered an up-and-coming area, as it has a good infrastructure and jobs have been created.
The castle in its present state offers several possibilities of use:

On the one hand it can be converted into individual residential units. On the one hand, it can be converted into individual residential units, and on the other hand, the building and its existing infrastructure can be converted into a hotel and restaurant.

Due to this unspoilt green landscape, it is also possible to use it as a health resort and sanatorium.
